We all agree that we need an Immigration reform. It seems that a real breakthrough was achieved today… However, is it really possible to have a reform, and what main areas of law I believe need to be “reformed”?
First, I believe the rules of the adjustment of status have to be changed, allowing EWI (those who crossed the border) to get their green cards. I am not encouraging this type of “immigration”, but for many people who honestly worked and paid taxes and do not have criminal convictions, it would be a great help in trying to concentrate on their US citizen families and not on whether or not there is ICE behind the door.
Second, it’s employment immigration process. I believe, right now the process is way too complicated and amounts to a rocket science. Everybody needs not only geniuses, but regular skilled workers. Why do they have to wait for 5-6 years to get their green cards?
Third, it’s same sex couples. Please, let us just stop this discrimination, and face that gay people are not going just disappear because somebody thinks they are not really married. Please…
Fourth, it’s different ‘bars” and hardship standards… This thing has to be changed. Why somebody, who is married to a US citizen has to “jump through hoops” sometimes bigger and more difficult to prove they are worthy of living with their family members than somebody who has ten drug convictions and doesn’t care about their family at all, but.. oh well, happened to be born in the US…
There are of course other aspects that are not perfect, and I do believe the reform will not be perfect, but it definitely can be a great start.
