Hispanics’ Call to Action for Immigration Reform

January 17, 2013

A coalition of Hispanic labor organizations and civil rights groups has begun mobilizing for immigration reform. The coalition consists of the National Council of La Raza, Service Employees International Union, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, the League of United Latin American Citizens, the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, Mi Familia Vota, Voto Latino and the Hispanic Federation. The Arizona Daily Star reported about the coalition’s nationally launched campaign for immigration reform legislation in 2013.

Exit polls analyzed by a section of Pew Research Center, the Pew Hispanic Center, indicated that President Obama took 71 percent of the Hispanic votes compared with the 27 percent Governor Romney acquired. This is despite the fact that President Obama promised immigration reform during his term and did not deliver and it is also despite the fact that deportation statistics rose to highest ever records, greatly surpassing the deportation statistics during the eight years President Bush was in office. However, despite a failed DREAM Act and other immigration attempts, Hispanics believed President Obama offered the best choice for immigration reform. The Hispanic coalition’s demand is for comprehensive legislation that it calls “a path to citizenship.” According to Pew Research Center, the United States has 53 million Hispanics which comprise 17 percent of the total U.S. population and 10 percent of the vote. However, the research center estimates that by 2030, Hispanics will constitute 40 percent of the growth in the electoral vote. The coalition was quoted as saying that Hispanic voters sent a clear message in the last election that they expect immigration reform.
