Deportation Statistics

As one year ends and the next year ushers in, we like to take stock and evaluate, which help provide an analysis for future planning. While the Obama administration again promises immigration reform, statistics indicate that deportation during for the period of the President’s term and in particular deportation statistics during 2012 reached an all time high.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that the fiscal year ending deportation statistics were as follows:

  • 409,849 total removals
  • Felony or misdemeanor convictions for 225,390 of individuals removed
  • The felony/misdemeanor removal statistics close to double the same statistic for 2008
  • 1,215 homicide convictions
  • 5,557 sexual offenses convictions
  • 40,448 drug crimes convictions
  • 36,166 DUI (driving under the influence) convictions

Other focuses that ICE based deportation on were criminal law violations, national security threats, recent illegal border crossings and repeated immigration violations.

Despite record-setting statistics, TRAC Immigration of Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) showed deportation slowing down in November 2012. Deportation filings in November were 14,926, which were 5.7 percent less than October 2012 and 24.8 percent less than the fiscal year (FY) 2012 and 27.4 percent less than FY 2011. Of those deportation filings, ICE obtained 9,827 deportation orders from immigration judges, which included removal and voluntary departure orders. So, in addition to the drop in filings, there was a deportation order drop of a 9.9 percent drop over the previous month. In the FY 2013, 56.3 percent of Immigration court closures led to removal or voluntary departure, which meant that 43.7 percent of the filings resulted in individuals being legally allowed to stay in the United States.
